Democrat Becca Balint served in Vermont’s Legislature as the state Senate president, and before that was a middle school teacher. When she's inaugurated in January, she’ll also be Vermont’s first openly gay person to serve in Congress. Balint easily beat Republican nominee Liam Madden, a Marine veteran and a self-described independent looking to disrupt the two-party system.
