In a new book, Dr. Ronald Miller argues for a wider range of models for understanding abnormal psychology.

Do we need to fundamentally rethink the way we understand and treat mental illness?

In a new book, psychologist Ronald Miller argues that mental health practitioners need to break away from the prevailing modes of diagnosis and treatment, and look to alternative models. He calls for what he calls "a pragmatic view" of mental illness, focused on whatever best relieves human suffering, and less reliance on medication.

Ronald Miller joins us; he's a professor of psychology at St. Michael's College, and author of the new book "Not So Abnormal Psychology: A Pragmatic View of Mental Illness." We're also joined by Terry Rabinowitz, professor of psychiatry at the University of Vermont and medical director of the Psychiatric Consultation Service at the UVM Medical Center.

Also on the show, we talk with Robert Lehmert, who has started a cooperative dedicated to the commercial cultivation of milkweed in Vermont.

Plus, we read your email and comments.
