Longtime Washington County Sen. Bill Doyle will not be returning to the Statehouse in January. Doyle has withdrawn his request to have a recount in a race that he lost by 191 votes.
For many years he served as the chairman of the Senate Government Operations committee and he still teaches political science classes at Johnson State College.
Immediately after the election, Doyle asked for a recount in the race. But he says he changed his mind after talking to his supporters.
"Most people said that's mathematically almost impossible, to turn 191 votes," he said.
Doyle was first elected to the Senate in 1968 and has been re-elected 23 times. He says he plans to remain active in local politics.
