Trump Transition Prompts Examination Of LGBTQ Legal Rights In Vermont

Evan Vucci

The White House is lit up in rainbow colors in commemoration of the Supreme Court's ruling to legalize same-sex marriage on Friday, June 26, 2015, in Washington.

Many communities are concerned that the Trump administration could have a negative impact on their lives. Among them are people who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer, people whose rights have only recently been codified.

This week, three lawyers spoke at the Pride Center of Vermont to help concerned citizens understand which rights, privileges and federally funded programs for LGBTQ people might be compromised by a change in presidential administrations. On Thursday, those three lawyers bring their expertise to Vermont Edition to explain the legal protections that LGBTQ people have under Vermont state law, and which federal protections are -- and are not -- in doubt.  Our guests are attorneys Susan Murray, Mark Keller and Zarina Suarez O'Hagin.

Also this in the program, a new service that lets Vermonters send a text message to get connected to crisis services. The Crisis Text Line is free service in which counselors can direct emergency services to individuals who are at "imminent risk."  Deputy Mental Health Commissioner Melissa Bailey joins us to explain more.

Broadcast live on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
