The World Is Your Oyster

There might just be two types of people in this world: those who can't stand the thought of eating an oyster and those who would go to the ends of the earth for a bite of one of these tasty little morsels. This show will appeal to the latter.

We speak with author Rowan Jacobsen, whose new book is The Essential Oyster: A Salty Appreciation of Taste and Temptation. And with John Brawley, owner of Sweet Sound Oysters.

They discuss all things oysters, including how they're raised, how they're best eaten and the many varieties that are available.

  • See photographs of different oyster varieties from Jacobsen's book in the slideshow above.

Also on the program, Mike Pieciak, Commissioner of the Department of Financial Regulation, joins us to discuss initiatives designed to combat elder financial abuse in Vermont, in conjunction with National Senior$afe Training Week.

Broadcast live on Monday, October 3, 2016 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.

Ric was a producer for Vermont Edition and host of the VPR Cafe.
One in five Vermonters is considered elderly. But what does being elderly even mean — and what do Vermonters need to know as they age? I’m looking into how aging in Vermont impacts living essentials such as jobs, health care and housing. And also how aging impacts the stuff of life: marriage, loss, dating and sex.
