During the next few weeks, we'll be sharing a few memorable past Vermont Edition segments. We invite you to listen again to an interview with the members of the slam poetry group "Muslim Girls Making Change," as well as to a discussion about the ukulele. Plus, a new conversation about an old painting in St. Johnsbury that will soon undergo major repairs.
Muslim Girls Making Change:
Back in April, we talked with four Vermont high school students using slam poetry to challenge prejudices and stereotypes about the Muslim community. Their group is called Muslim Girls Making Change.
Balkisa Abdikadir, Hawa Adam, Lena Ginawi and Kiran Waqar spoke to VPR's Ric Cengeri about how their group formed, their writing process, who inspires them and their personal experiences in Vermont.
Find the original show page here.
Muslim Girls Making Change also performed and talked about their piece "Wake Up America" during the program.

Muslim Girls Making Change will also be performing as part of Burlington City Arts' free concert series on Aug. 26. Learn more here.
Albert Bierstadt's The Domes of the Yosemite:
Albert Bierstadt's painting The Domes of the Yosemite is nearly 150 years old and makes its home at the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum.
VPR's Jane Lindholm recently spoke with Bob Joly, the director of the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum, about how the gallery came to have this Bierstadt painting in its collection, as well as the plan and timeline for repairs that it needs to have done.
The Ukulele:
The ukulele has been having a resurgence in popularity. In April, VPR's Ric Cengeri spoke with musician Dwayne Doner, who has been playing the ukulele for 17 years.
"It's a great instrument," Doner said. "And something about ukulele players, you just want to see other people play ukulele."
In addition to playing a few tunes on the program, Doner discussed his musical background and mentioned some ukulele groups in Vermont for people interested in the instrument.
