Stellafane And Springfield's Stargazing History

The 80th Stellafane Convention will be held this year from August 13-16.

Since the 1920s, the Springfield Telescope Makers have been hosting the annual Stellafane Convention. This year's convention will run from August 13-16.

We're looking at the long history of Stellafane, and how Springfield became a center for amateur astronomy and a pilgrimage site for telescope-makers and stargazers of every stripe.

And we'll ask: can home-made telescopes and astronomy still capture the imagination in an era of smart phones and a thousand other distractions?

We're joined by Tom Spirock, member and former Secretary of the Springfield Telescope Makers.

Also on the show, we talk to Aaron Goldberg and Jeffrey Potash of the Ohavi Zedek Synagogue about the path that a hundred-year-old shul mural has taken to its new home.

Jane Lindholm is the host, executive producer and creator of But Why: A Podcast For Curious Kids. In addition to her work on our international kids show, she produces special projects for Vermont Public. Until March 2021, she was host and editor of the award-winning Vermont Public program Vermont Edition.
