When it comes to eating local, the very definition of “local” is changing. Movers and shakers in the local food movement are reframing the concept of local food from being strictly about mileage to one that incorporates a set of implied values — like how the workers or animals were treated, and land stewardship.
We look at how the local food movement and markets have changed, and what expectations customers and farmers have when they talk about a local food market. Our guests include: Martin Langeveld of Strolling of the Heifers, Vermont food writer Melissa Pasanen, Abbey Willard of the Agency of Agriculture, and Erin Buckwalter of NOFA Vermont.
Also in the program, the state has a goal of reducing the waiting lists for people seeking treatment for opiate addiction. But what can be done to help people while they are actually on the waiting lists? We talk with UVM College of Medicine Professor of Psychiatry Stacey Sigmon, who has just received a grant for a trial project that will attempt to answer this question.
And, who hasn't passed a few minutes watching cat videos on YouTube? Recently, the Humane Society of Chittenden County held a film festival in which all the movies were home-made cat videos. VPR's Annie Russell reports from the A-cat-emy Awards.
