In the race for Lieutenant Governor, Progressive/Democrat David Zuckerman has defeated Republican Randy Brock and Liberty Union candidate Boots Wardinski.
It was Zuckerman’s first statewide race. He defeated a candidate who was once elected state auditor and also ran for governor in 2012.
Speaking at a Democratic election night event in Burlington on Tuesday, Zuckerman took issue with those who say Vermont should not be a leader in seeking solutions to critical social and environmental issues.
“We have to lead the way on climate change issues. We have to lead the way on economic justice. We have to lead the way on dealing with our social inequities when we have disproportionate rates of people of color being pulled over by law enforcement. We have to create a just and fair society here in Vermont,” he told the crowd.
Zuckerman has served in both the House and Senate.
Like his predecessor, now Governor-elect Phil Scott, Zuckerman will be have to work with an administration from the other party.
Unofficial results show Zuckerman with just over 50 percent of the vote, about 7 percentage points ahead of Brock.
Liberty Union candidate Boots Wardinski received about 2 percent.
