Poet Major Jackson Wins 2016 Vermont Book Award

Poet and University of Vermont professor Major Jackson was announced as the winner of this year's Vermont Book Award on Saturday night at a gala at the Vermont College of Fine Arts.

"I was quite shocked and humbled and deeply honored," Jackson told Vermont Edition on Mondayregarding his reaction to winning for his 2015 book of poetry titled Roll Deep.

"All of the finalists represent to me the full range of the kind of writing that happens here in Vermont," Jackson added.

The Vermont Book Award, which is in its second year, was created by VCFA to honor literature and writers that have a strong connection to Vermont.

Jackson spoke with Vermont Edition  about his poetry's themes and style, and the importance of being "responsible with language".

I’m looking into how aging in Vermont impacts living essentials such as jobs, health care and housing. And also how aging impacts the stuff of life: marriage, loss, dating and sex.
