In 2013, Vermont passed the country's first law against patent scamming, or the improper assertion of patent rights to obtain financial benefits. These entities, commonly known as "patent trolls," are now rebutting by suing the state.
Eric Goldman, a professor of law and director of the High Tech Law Institute at Santa Clara University, spoke to Vermont Edition about the legal assertion rights of patent holders and how other states and the nation have been following Vermont's lead.
