Washers! It's The New Horseshoes

At backyard picnics around the state, families and friends pass the time over convivial games of cornhole or horseshoes. “Washers” is a twist on that concept, where players throw metal hardware washers, instead of beanbags or horseshoes.

On a recent sunny Saturday afternoon in South Hero, 50 competitors showed up for what is ambitiously dubbed the International Washers Tournament.

A single  Scottish competitor is what makes that tournament “international.” The field also included a 91-year-old retired doctor from New Hampshire and an opera singer from New York City.

VPR’s Ric Cengeri had a front-row seat for the proceedings, and he also competed in the double-elimination tournament! In his rookie season, his team won three matches before being eliminated in the semifinal round of the loser’s bracket.

Ric was a producer for Vermont Edition and host of the VPR Cafe.
Jane Lindholm is the host, executive producer and creator of But Why: A Podcast For Curious Kids. In addition to her work on our international kids show, she produces special projects for Vermont Public. Until March 2021, she was host and editor of the award-winning Vermont Public program Vermont Edition.
