At backyard picnics around the state, families and friends pass the time over convivial games of cornhole or horseshoes. “Washers” is a twist on that concept, where players throw metal hardware washers, instead of beanbags or horseshoes.
On a recent sunny Saturday afternoon in South Hero, 50 competitors showed up for what is ambitiously dubbed the International Washers Tournament.
A single Scottish competitor is what makes that tournament “international.” The field also included a 91-year-old retired doctor from New Hampshire and an opera singer from New York City.
VPR’s Ric Cengeri had a front-row seat for the proceedings, and he also competed in the double-elimination tournament! In his rookie season, his team won three matches before being eliminated in the semifinal round of the loser’s bracket.
