Vt. Civil War Letters Open Window To History

Middlebury College alum John McHenry had a shoebox in his home in California full of letters from his family dating back to the Civil War. He was looking for a better place to preserve them and gave them to his alma mater. He flew them to Vermont himself on the occasion of his college reunion. McHenry gave 85 documents, including about 80 letters to the college.

Rebekah Irwin is Director of Collections and Archives at Middlebury College. She spoke with Vermont Edition about what these documents reveal about the lives of young Vermont soldiers in the Civil War.

Jane Lindholm is the host, executive producer and creator of But Why: A Podcast For Curious Kids. In addition to her work on our international kids show, she produces special projects for Vermont Public. Until March 2021, she was host and editor of the award-winning Vermont Public program Vermont Edition.
