Carving The Perfect Pumpkin

AP/Toby Talbot
Karen Moynihan carves a pumpkin as her dog, Fawn, enjoys the sunshine.

For 33 straight years, children of all ages have been driving to Ellie’s Farm Market in West Berlin to catch a glimpse of what has been dubbed as the Great Green Mountain Pumpkin Show. Show up on an October evening and you’ll see over one thousand pumpkins carved beautifully and lit on the hillside behind Ellie’s.

Although Ellie’s hasn’t been able to put on the show for the last three years (this year because of a pumpkin shortage caused by the heavy rains of the late spring and early summer), that hasn’t diminished the carving skills of Ellie’s co-owner Karen Moynihan. Moynihan spoke with Vermont Edition about carving the perfect pumpkin.

Jane Lindholm is the host, executive producer and creator of But Why: A Podcast For Curious Kids. In addition to her work on our international kids show, she produces special projects for Vermont Public. Until March 2021, she was host and editor of the award-winning Vermont Public program Vermont Edition.
