Col. Michael J. Colburn joined the United States Marine Band in 1987. He became its 27th director in 2004.

On July 12, St. Albans native Michael J. Colburn stepped down as director of the United States Marine Band, known as The President's Own. Colburn joined the USMB in 1987 as a euphonium player, quickly becoming principal euphonium. He worked his way up through assistant director positions until he became the 27th director in 2004. He speaks with Walter Parker this morning.

After graduate studies in musicology at New York University, Walter began his radio career at WNCN in New York. He joined Vermont Public in 1984.
