Levitt AMP St. Johnsbury: Afro-Andean Funk

Levitt AMP St. Johnsbury: Afro-Andean Funk

The Levitt AMP St. Johnsbury Music Series, hosted by Catamount Arts, welcomes pioneering Latin Grammy-nominated world music fusionists Afro-Andean Funk to Dog Mountain, on Sunday, August 17th, at 5 p.m. Fusing Afro-Andean culture and the indigenous Quechua language with American funk, rock, and global rhythms, Afro-Andean Funk bridge cultural and geographic divides by celebrating a variety of musical traditions.
Led by Peruvian singer Araceli Poma and American music producer/bassist/composer Matt Geraghty, the band’s unique blend of Afro-Andean roots, world music, and funk draws on themes of social struggle, shamanic ceremony, and indigenous Peruvian traditions. With a mission to unite musical cultures and showcase the Quechua language, the most widely spoken indigenous language in South America, their music is a thrilling and joyful experience.

Formed in 2021, after Geraghty met Poma while filming the acclaimed documentary series, “The Warrior Women of Afro-Peruvian Music,” Afro-Andean Funk quickly gained international attention. Their 2022 debut album “The Sacred Leaf” earned a Latin Grammy nomination, and was quickly followed by their 2023 release “Flower on Fire.” In 2024, the band booked an expansive touring schedule, performing at major festivals and venues across North America including the Lincoln Center and Bryant Park.

Since 2017, the Levitt AMP St. Johnsbury Music Festival has brought weekly free family-friendly concerts to St. Johnsbury’s Dog Mountain all summer long. This season’s Sunday shows at Dog Mountain start at 5 p.m. and run through August. Additionally, one Friday night Levitt AMP concert is scheduled per month as part of Final Friday celebrations on Railroad Street.

Dogs are welcome at Levitt AMP St. Johnsbury concerts at Dog Mountain, where food and drink vendors are available onsite, but no outdoor alcohol is permitted. Patrons are welcome to bring food, blankets, and low beach chairs. Thanks to Kingdom Trails, switchback footpaths provide easier passage from the parking area to the concert green. Parking is also available at Fairbanks Scales on Portland Street, where patrons can then board a free shuttle, courtesy of RCT, up to Dog Mountain. Visit www.catamounarts.org for more information.

The Levitt AMP St. Johnsbury Music Series is supported in part by the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation, which partners with changemakers and nonprofits across the country to activate underused outdoor spaces through the power of free live music—bringing people together, fostering belonging, and invigorating community life. Presenting high-caliber talent and a broad array of music genres and cultural programming, Levitt concerts are welcoming and inclusive destinations where people of all ages and backgrounds come together.

In 2025, the national Levitt network of music venues and concert sites is presenting 650+ free concerts in 50 towns and cities nationwide, with audiences approaching one million. In addition to supporting free concerts, the Levitt Foundation is dedicated to advancing equitable music ecosystems through research and partnerships. Learn more at www.levitt.org.
