In March, the Vermont Agency of Education circulated best practices for schools regarding transgender students.

The debate over transgender rights and equity is now focused on schools with a federal guideline last week that directs school districts to uphold the rights of transgender kids.  Meanwhile, Vermont has its own set of best practices for schools to support transgender youth.

Wednesday on Vermont Edition, we look at what the Vermont Agency of Education suggests are best practices for schools, and how that policy is implemented across the state. Our guests are Education Secretary Rebecca Holcombe and Dana Kaplan, education director for Outright Vermont, an LGBTQ youth advocacy organization.

Also in the program, a First Nations art exhibit in Montreal. A big, multi-venue art exhibition in Montreal showcases contemporary art by native artists across the continent. We talk with the curator, Michael Patten, about his vision for the project.

Broadcast live on Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.

Patti is an integral part of VPR's news effort and part of the team that created Vermont Edition.
