Vermont's Maple Business: Do The Dollars Make Sense?

Toby Talbot

AP
Maple sugar making creates the quivalent of around 3,000 jobs in Vermont.

When it comes to maple syrup production in the U.S., Vermont is number 1. That's not per capita. Vermont produces 42 percent of the country's maple syrup.

The industry has more than doubled in Vermont over the past two decades. And with annual sales of over $200 million, syrup is big business.

We take a look at the economics of maple with UVM Extension Farm Business Specialist Mark Cannella. His group produces the Maple Business Benchmark report.  And we also hear from Florence Becot, a research specialist for UVM's Center for Rural Studies. The Center recently published a study on the maple industry in Vermont.

Also on the program, the Chittenden Solid Waste District has launched a traveling mural project called the Art of Recycling, in collaboration with (and funded by) Dealer.com. Artists have been decorating eight 22-foot-long recycling containers to draw attention to the district's recycling efforts. Mary Lacy, one of the artists and the coordinator of the project, and Jonny Finity, marketing specialist at CSWD, show off their work.

Broadcast live on Thurs., March 17, 2016, at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
