VPR Cafe: Pick Your Own Potatoes

Tristan Covey, 13, of Williamstown, collects potatoes left behind by potato pickers at the Chappelle's Potato Farm's annual pick-your-own harvest day

Throughout summer and fall in Vermont you can go to farms and pick your own berries, cherries, apples, pumpkins and even potatoes.

In late September, Chappelle's Vermont Potatoes in Williamstown opens their fields for the people to come and pick their own potatoes.

"Everyone would stand as the potato digger went by and it would churn up the potatoes and they would grab the biggest one," said Melissa Pasanen, a contributor to the Savorvore Section of the Burlington Free Press.

The event brought a mix of new potato pickers and veterans who were there to collect a year's supply of spuds. One women, Pasanen said, brought separate buckets so she could sort all the potatoes she collected by size.

You can find out more about the event in Pasanen's piece "Pick Your Own Potatoes A 30 Year Tradition."

The VPR Café is made possible by Otter Creek Kitchenware in downtown Middlebury, offering over 70 lines of kitchenware.
