This week, Joel Najman's My Place program presents the first in a series of profiles of gospel, soul and session singer extraordinaire Cissy Houston.
Known as the mother of singer Whitney Houston and aunt of singers Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick, Cissy Houston's own career as a professional singer today extends over sixty years. This week's My Place traces Cissy's earliest recordings with her family gospel group The Drinkard Singers, as well as her early work as a session vocalist in New York City, singing backup on famous hit records by the Drifters, Solomon Burke, Doris Troy and others.
