New Bishop, New Leadership For Vt. Catholics

Steve Zind
/
VPR
Christopher Coyne was officially installed today as the Tenth Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington. About 118,000 Vermonters are Catholic, but about 28,000 attend church regularly.

The newly installed bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington exuberantly exclaims that getting "fannies in the pews" is one of his top goals.  Bishop Christopher Coyne has just been installed, and he's our guest on the next Vermont Edition.  Coyne discusses his goals of getting lapsed Catholics back to church, making amends for past child abuse cases and elevating the church's social mission to help the poor.

Also in the program, it's the new installment of our series Dorothy's List. This month, VPR's Amy Noyes visits Moretown School where fourth and fifth graders are reading the novel P.S. Be Eleven by Rita Garcia-Williams. The author visited with the young readers to talk through the books themes of cultural change and changing family dynamics as three sisters grow up in 1970's Brooklyn.

Broadcast live on Mon., Feb. 2, 2015 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
