Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Thousands of children in Vermont are being raised by their grandparents. Experts in the field of family care-giving say that in the vast majority of these cases, the parents’ drug addiction prompted grandparents to step in to care for the grandchildren. On the next Vermont Edition, we explore the complicated legal, family and social issues that arise when grandparents raise their grandkids. Our guests are Lynn Granger and Brenda Hamlin of Vermont Kin As Parents. The organization's Annual Kinship Conference is Tuesday, Sept. 9.

Also in the program, Dorothy's List returns for Season 2! Each month we highlight a book nominated for the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children’s Book Award. This month, VPR's Amy Noyes takes us to the Stowe Free Library where a student book club is reading 33 Minutes Till Morgan Sturtz Kicks My Butt by Todd Hasak-Lowy, one of 30 titles nominated for this year's DCF Award.

And, we take to the polo pitch as the Sugarbush Polo Club prepares for a weekend match.

Broadcast live on Mon., Sept. 8, 2014 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
