Vermont houses almost 500 prisoners in private out-of-state facilities.

Vermont sends nearly 500 prisoners to privately run out-of-state facilities in Kentucky and Arizona. The contract with the company that operates these jails, Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), comes up for renewal next year.

Now, a group of concerned Vermonters is proposing that room be made here to return these prisoners to the state.

State Representative Suzi Wizowaty is the director of Vermonters for Criminal Justice Reform, the group pushing to bring the prisoners back to Vermont. We hear from her and from Department of Corrections Commissioner Andy Pallito on the group's plan.

Also on the program, last week, Brandon voters rejected their town budget for the fourth time. We hear from Lee Kahrs, the Editor of the Brandon Reporter, about why this budget has been so difficult to pass and how the bills are being paid with no new budget in place.

And we remember VPR Commentator and Vermont Law School Professor Cheryl Hanna, who died on Sunday.

Broadcast live on Tuesday, July 29 at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.
