Gas Pipeline Stirs Debate Over Economic Development, Land Use

AP/Toby Talbot, File
In this Jan. 25, 2001 file photo, a gas supply line is seen in St. Albans.

11/11/13 at Noon and 7 P.M.:  Vermont Gas Systems is planning a major project to provide natural gas to Addison County and beyond. Phase 2 of the project would lay pipes under Lake Champlain to serve the International Paper plant in Ticonderoga, New York.

The relatively low cost of natural gas is attractive, but the proposal is meeting opposition from some landowners and climate activists.  We explore the issues Monday on Vermont Edition with Don Gilbert, president and CEO of Vermont Gas Systems, and with Bruce Hiland, chair of the Cornwall Select Board, which opposes the project.

Also in the program, we mark Veterans Day. In 2001, one Norwich University junior put his graduation on hold to serve in the active duty military.  Now, after 12 years in the Army, Logan Potskowski has returned to Norwich to complete his degree. He shares his perspective on being a young veteran.

And VPR News Director John Dillon explains how the Vermont Republican Party chose David Sunderland as its new chair on Saturday.
