11/5/13 at noon and 7 p.m.: When homeless shelters are full, people who need emergency housing are given motel vouchers, an assistance program whose costs the state has been trying to control. But housing agencies are attempting their own solutions, including purchases of hotel and apartment buildings for temporary housing.
On the next Vermont Edition, we talk with Michael Monte of Champlain Housing Trust about the organization's purchase of a former EconoLodge in Shelburne that will now serve as emergency short-term housing. And David Yacovone, commissioner of the Department for Children and Families explains why legislative efforts to curb spending on the state's hotel voucher program have fallen flat this year. Also, Elizabeth Ready from the John W. Graham Emergency Shelter in Vergennes joins us to describe that organization's purchase of an apartment building for transitional homeless housing.
Later in the program, a new documentary celebrates the joy and thrift of community-run ski hills. Brothers Tyler and Elliot Wilkinson-Ray talk with Vermont Edition about their film, United We Ski, and some local gems like Eastern Slopes in East Corinth and Cochran's in Richmond.
And speaking of Richmond, we visit the Old Round Church there, which is celebrating its 200th anniversary.
