Broadening Vermont’s Tourism Appeal

AP/Toby Talbot

Wed, Aug 21 Noon and 7 PM  Vermont is a great tourist destination. But is it so for ethnic minorities? The Vermont Department of Tourism believes so, and has expanded the marketing of the state to reflect that. It has also created the Vermont African American Heritage Trail.

Catherine Brooks from the Department of Tourism and Curtiss Reed, executive director of the Vermont Partnership for Fairness and Diversity, discuss these new marketing efforts and the Heritage Trail. And we check in with some of the historical sites on the trail.

Listen to a related Vermont Edition program with Elise Guyette, author of "Discovering Black Vermont."

Also on the program, Hal Hamilton is founder and co-director of the Sustainable Food Lab in Hartland. He has received a James Beard Leadership Award, which recognizes visionaries across all sectors responsible for creating a healthful, sustainable and safe food world. We get his reaction to the award.

Plus, this year Vermont is one of a few states in the nation starting a pilot program to help beginning farmers get off the ground with their agricultural enterprises. We hear from Becky Frye, who is one of 25 young farmers in the program.

Ric was a producer for Vermont Edition and host of the VPR Cafe.
Jane Lindholm is the host, executive producer and creator of But Why: A Podcast For Curious Kids. In addition to her work on our international kids show, she produces special projects for Vermont Public. Until March 2021, she was host and editor of the award-winning Vermont Public program Vermont Edition.
