Book Details Civil War Sites In Vermont

AP/Toby Talbot

Fri 5/31/13 Noon & 7PM. Vermont may have been physically far-removed from the battles of the Civil War, but towns across the state felt the war’s impact locally through soldiers who served in it, and the civilians who volunteered support.

Historian Howard Coffin chronicles unexpected Vermont Civil War sites in his new book, “Something Abides: Discovering the Civil War in Today’s Vermont.” We talk with Coffin about some of the locations and stories he’s uncovered, including churches where abolitionists spoke, hospital sites, and homes where women gathered to sew for soldiers.

Also in the program, the coarseness of political discourse. The Vermont Bar Association is hosting a public conference on Saturday about civility in politics. We talk with keynote speaker Jim Leach, chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities and former congressman from Iowa.

And we listen back to some of the voices in this week’s news.
