Standing Up For Yourself

Wed 5/29/13 Noon & 7 pm People with intellectual disabilities often have difficulty finding jobs, or getting into relationships, or even living on their own. But learning how to demand higher expectations – from others, and from themselves- can sometimes be the biggest obstacle.

We’ll learn about the benefits and challenges of self-advocacy in the disability community with Karen Topper and Max Barrows from Green Mountain Self Advocates.  We'll also hear from Tracy Thresher and Nicole LeBlanc.

Also in the program, the New Hampshire Legislature is struggling to find agreement over the state budget. The House rejected the Senate's idea for a casino, the Senate turned down the House's plan to raise cigarette and gas taxes. John Gregg of the Valley News explains a Senate committee's new effort to cut spending instead of raising revenue. 

And, we celebrate the "Rite of Spring," Igor Stravinsky's groundbreaking ballet that was first performed 100 years ago ago today. Pianists David Kaplan and Timo Andres will perform "Right of Spring" Wednesday under the auspices of the Burlington Ensemble.

In addition to her work on our international kids show, she produces special projects for Vermont Public.
