Vermont Public Radio has received a $118,000 gift to support live performances on VPR Classical.
The gift was made in memory of long-time VPR listeners and supporters Ray and Patricia Harwick by Ray’s daughter, Joslyn G. Ewart of King of Prussia, Pa.; and Ray’s son and daughter-in-law, Nevin and Heather Harwick, of Albuquerque, N.M. Ray and Pat were long-time residents of Wake Robin in Shelburne.
“Ray and Pat Harwick loved classical music and they loved living in Vermont,” the family said in an email to VPR. “We could not think of a better tribute than to honor them with their own VPR live performance series. We anticipate that it will inspire listeners to enjoy and support classical music with comparable passion and enthusiasm!”
The gift endows four live broadcasts per year. The first concert in the Ray and Patricia Harwick Live Performance Series will take place Thursday, January 16 at 11:00 a.m. featuring the Heath Quartet.
“Not every city or state has access to classical music on the radio, but thanks to support from listeners, VPR Classical is thriving,” said Scott Finn, VPR President and CEO. “Ray and Patricia were devoted fans of VPR Classical performances, and we’re honored to receive this generous gift that will enable future audiences to experience the thrill of live classical music.”
VPR Classical is Vermont's only classical music station, bringing listeners the broad world of classical music with a strong local connection. Local hosts Helen Lyons, Walter Parker, and James Stewart share their extensive knowledge and passion for the music Monday through Friday. Other highlights include the VPR Choral Hour with Linda Radtke, Performance Today, Sunday Baroque, From The Top, and weekly concerts from the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and Boston Symphony Orchestra. VPR Classical can be heard on 17 stations around the state, as well as on HD radio, VPR.org and mobile devices.
