United States Air Force Colonel Mark Anarumo has been named president of Norwich University.

Colonel Mark Anarumo will be Norwich University’s 24th president. He’ll take over when current president Richard Schneider retires this spring.

Alan Deforest, chair of the college board of trustees, made the announcement today.

"We are confident that we have selected an exceptional individual who will inspire our 200 year old university to reach even greater levels of excellence," Deforest said. "Col. Anarumo is currently the director of and permanent professor for the Center of Character and Leadership Development, U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado."

Anarumo was selected from a pool of 48 applicants as part of a search that started in the fall of 2018.

Anarumo made brief remarks and took questions at this morning’s announcement. He acknowledged, with a looming drop in college-age students, this is a tough time in higher education.

"I want to get out there and sell what Norwich is, and it’s an honest story," he said. "It should be leveraged as a unique national institution that I don’t think will have trouble surviving, not only surviving but thriving, in the challenging times ahead."

Anarumo is slated to start June 1.
