The Friends of the Vermont State House and the Vermont Humanities Council will host a daylong journalism symposium Wednesday in Montpelier, called "Old News / New News / Real News / Fake News."

Economic and political changes are staring down journalism professionals in ways that, while not necessarily new, pose complex new challenges. To examine this new landscape, the Friends of the Vermont State House and the Vermont Humanities Council will host a daylong journalism symposium Wednesday in Montpelier, called “Old News / New News / Real News / Fake News."

Tom Slayton, a regular commentator for VPR, is chair of the symposium. He spoke with VPR about the rise of so-called "fake news," as well as noted the financial and structural issues driving change in the news business, and how new technologies are changing journalism.

Journalists will take part in the symposium as panelists and moderators, including VPR's Jane Lindholm and Peter Hirschfeld.

The symposium is open to the public, but Slayton warns it's almost at capacity. Information about registration can be found here.

A graduate of NYU with a Master's Degree in journalism, Mitch has more than 20 years experience in radio news. He got his start as news director at NYU's college station, and moved on to a news director (and part-time DJ position) for commercial radio station WMVY on Martha's Vineyard. But public radio was where Mitch wanted to be and he eventually moved on to Boston where he worked for six years in a number of different capacities at member station WBUR...as a Senior Producer, Editor, and fill-in co-host of the nationally distributed Here and Now. Mitch has been a guest host of the national NPR sports program "Only A Game". He's also worked as an editor and producer for international news coverage with Monitor Radio in Boston.
Bayla joined VPR in 2018 as the producer for Morning Edition. She left in 2019.
