The base lodge at the shuttered Ascutney Mountain Resort will be cleaned up for asbestos two years after it was destroyed in a fire.
The South Windsor County Regional Planning Commission will be giving $30,000 to Ascutney Outdoors, the nonprofit managing the former ski area property.
The group recently assumed ownership of the destroyed base lodge.
The funding for asbestos cleanup comes was awarded by the Environmental Protection Agency; the funding is for mitigating sites deemed hazardous.
Tom Kennedy, the executive director of the South Windsor County Regional Planning Commission, says the funding will abate the small amounts of asbestos in the burnt-out building.
“The goal being [to] put a much smaller lodge where that building sits today,” he told VPR Monday.
The demolition of the base lodge is expected to start at the end of January.
The resort on Mount Ascutney closed down in 2010 due to financial difficulties. Thanks to the efforts of Ascutney Outdoors, four-season recreation is returning to the mountain — including skiing, with a new rope tow.
