Chemical Spill Closes Burlington Beach

A Burlington beach has been closed due to a chemical spill. According to the Agency of Natural Resources, a fire-suppressing foam was discharged into a brook a short distance from Lake Champlain near Blanchard Beach at Oakledge Park.

The spill occurred Thursday at Global Company LLC and continued for an unknown period of time until it was detected and stopped shortly before 3 p.m.

According to a notice from the agency, “Risk to human health/environment has not been determined, though anticipated to be small due to dilution. State department of health was consulted but does not have thresholds for the constituents in the foam (polyethylene glycol, cumene sulfonate, calcium chloride and zinc chloride).”

The agency says the spill occurred when the foam was somehow diverted from a holding tank into a stormwater pond.
