The first soil sample results in North Bennington show very low levels of the contaminant PFOA. PFOA is a suspected carcinogen and dangerous levels of the chemical have been detected in private wells in the area.
A spokeswoman from the Department of Environmental Conservation says all of the soil results are well below the safety standard set by the Department of Health.
The state set its soil standard at 300 parts per trillion, and most of the soil sample results collected from private residences were in the single parts per trillion.
The state collected 148 soil samples from 37 locations around the former Chemfab plant, which is the suspected source of the contamination.
The Department of Environmental Conservation says the results were mailed to people in North Bennington this week.
The state says soil sample results will be posted on the DEC website starting on Monday.
