Police shot and killed a man as they were searching a Burlington residence Tuesday evening, according to a statement from Vermont State Police.
The Drug Enforcement Agency was the lead agency in the operation that led to the shooting; officials were at the residence on Elmwood Avenue in Burlington's Old North End with a federal search warrant.
The statement said that preliminary investigation "indicated that officers executing the search warrant confronted a male subject inside the residence. Officers discharged multiple rounds at the subject, resulting in his death. None of the officers involved were injured."
Tuesday evening, police tape blocked entry to the house - attached to a funeral home - where the shooting took place.
The statement did not provide any information about whether the man police killed was armed or about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Federal, state and local law enforcement officers took part in the search operation, the statement said. It did not say how many officers were involved, which agencies - besides the Drug Enforcement Agency - were involved or what they were investigating.
"This investigation is in it’s early stages and no other information is available at this time," the statement said. "Additional information will be released when available."
Vermont State Police sent its Major Crimes Unit and Bureau of Criminal Investigation to investigate the shooting. The statement said state police are "working closely with the Burlington Police Department and the DEA in conjunction with the Chittenden County State’s Attorney’s office."
