Stowe native Callagy Fahey Ross, 23, died in a snowboarding accident at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort on Monday. According to an article in the Jackson Hole News & Guide, Ross had moved to Jackson Hole just five days prior to work at the resort's ticketing office.
"She went briefly airborne on a steep pitch of the run in the trees, hitting the tree at high speed," the article reported. "Moran is a wide blue run with steeper pitches, bordered by woods on both sides. Visibility was poor at the time, which deputies said may have contributed to the accident. Trauma to her head and torso from the impact killed her despite the helmet she wore, authorities said."
The article quotes authorities as saying Ross was a "very experienced snowboarder." The article also states Ross was an avid sailor and survived the sinking of the Concordia in 2010.
"Callagy was raised on love, homemade bread, discipline, physical activity and generosity," Ross' family wrote in an obituary in the Stowe Reporter. "To know Callagy was to witness true beauty and share in a vibrancy that made all happy to be around her."
Her family named three Vermont charities for memorial donations: Vermont Works for Women, the Burton Chill Foundation and the University of Vermont sailing team.
