The House Democratic caucus will hear tonight from Frank Luntz, the country's leading Republican consultant, about how to successfully "frame the message" of controversial issues.
In Washington political circles, Luntz is known as the "messaging guru" for Republicans. One of the most famous phrases he popularized was the "death tax," a substitute for the federal inheritance tax.
Vermont Congressman Peter Welch, who is co-hosting a dinner with Luntz, says he's most interested in learning Luntz's views about the voter angst that many GOP presidential candidates seem to be tapping into.
"How he can explain how the Republicans can be successful when every one of their presidential candidates is so so hard and harsh on immigration?" Welch says.
Welch says House Democrats need to develop a better strategy of defining the economic challenges facing many middle income Americans. But he says he doesn't expect that Luntz will assist the Democrats in this effort.
