Vermont State Trooper Kyle Young died last Thursday because of heat stroke, the state police said Monday.
A release from state police spokesman Scott Waterman said the state medical examiner’s preliminary report “determined that the manner of death was accidental and the result of ‘exertional heat stroke’ due to ‘strenuous physical activity in high environmental temperature.’”
The release said Young was trying out for the state police’s Tactical Services Unit at the Ethan Allen Firing Range in Jericho on Thursday when he collapsed.
Young was rushed to the University of Vermont Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.
The release says investigators are still working toward “a complete understanding of the circumstances” around the event.
Public Safety Commissioner Keith Flynn announced a review of police policies in response to the death.
“In consultation with the governor, I have ordered a complete administrative review of the application processes and testing requirements for all Vermont State Police Special Purpose Teams while we await the final report and a complete understanding of what happened,” he said in the statement. “Our thoughts continue to be with Trooper Young and his family.”
