Authorities say three women who were found dead today in the Central Vermont community of Berlin are relatives of Jody Herring, who was arrested Friday for the shooting death of a Department of Children and Families employee in Barre.
The bodies of the women were found this morning by Berlin police who responded to a 911 call. Authorities say shell casings were found at the scene and gunshot wounds were apparent on at least two of the victims.
In a news release, authorities said the investigation is in the early stages and police are "exploring the connection with the homicide that occurred in Barre City yesterday afternoon".
The names of the deceased are being withheld for the moment.
The victim of the Barre shooting has been identified as 48-year-old DCF employee Lara Sobel.
In a statement issued Saturday afternoon, Gov. Peter Shumlin said, "The Vermont State Police are working collaboratively with the Barre and Berlin police and the investigation remains ongoing. Vermonters should know that there is no indication of a broader threat at this time to state employees or the general public. The tragedy that has gripped our state over the past 20 hours is immense. In the coming days we will need to pull together as a state to come to terms with these heinous events."
