Sabra Dipping Company Issues National Recall Of Its Classic Hummus

Sabra Dipping Co. is recalling approximately 30,000 cases of its Classic Hummus due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, according to a release posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The voluntary recall, announced on April 8, includes Sabra Classic Hummus packages of various sizes (10 oz, 30 oz, 32 oz), the Sabra Classic Hummus six-pack and Sabra’s Classic/Garlic Hummus dual pack.

The potential for contamination was discovered when a routine, random sample collected by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development at a retail location on March 30 tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

The release includes this information about the organism:

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Customers who have purchased any of these products should dispose of them, or may return the product to its place of purchase for a full refund.
