The U.S. Department of Education said Marlboro College is under investigation for issues relating to sexual violence.
Records show the department's Office of Civil Rights has been investigating the private non-profit college since early October.
The investigation is related to Title IX, the federal law protecting students from discrimination based on sex.
In the past six months, federal officials have launched more than 30 Title IX investigations across the U.S.
Of the 88 active investigations nationally as of Nov. 19, Marlboro was the only Vermont college or university under investigation, though Dartmouth College in New Hampshire is under investigation as well.
Marlboro College has 240 undergraduate students.
The college's Title Nine Coordinator and Dean of Students Xenia Markowitt declined to be interviewed by VPR, referring inquiries to the school's spokesperson, who did not immediately provide a comment on Tuesday.
Update Nov. 26 8:20 a.m. College spokesperson Matthew Barone issued a statement Wednesday morning regarding the investigation. In it, he emphasized that the college takes its sexual misconduct policy seriously and that an open investigation does not mean the college has been proven to be in violation of TitleIX.
Marlboro College did receive a letter from the Office for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education notifying us that a complaint has been filed with OCR. We take our sexual misconduct policy seriously and have complied fully with their requests. As noted in the letter from OCR, the decision by OCR to open an investigation in no way implies that OCR has made a determination with regard to the merits of the complaint.
