Hear The Lyrical Folk Harmonies Of Young Vermont Duo Cricket Blue

Cricket Blue
Laura Heaberlin and Taylor Smith are Cricket Blue. They release their untitled EP at Jenke Arts in Burlington on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 8 p.m.

Laura Heaberlin and Taylor Smith have been playing music together since they met at Middlebury College. Most people familiar with Burlington’s music scene now know them as Cricket Blue, a singing, acoustic-guitar-playing duo.

Heaberlin says she and Smith always write songs separately, then come together and work out their share of the sound.  Their music is inspired, in part, by fairy tales and the work of short story writer Angela Carter.

“I think we both enjoy storytelling that’s maybe simple in its execution but nuanced or challenging in the ideas that it’s about,” says Smith.

Their song, “Eve and Adam,” is an example of such musical storytelling. It’s about Eve’s interaction with Satan in the Garden of Eden. “I’m really into Biblical stories and Biblical mythology,” Heaberlin says.

“It’s one of the few songs when were we don’t sing the same words at the same time,” Smith adds.

Heaberlin says Burlington is a great place for up-and-coming musicians. “We’ve been able to play a lot of shows here,” she says.

“In our experience, the Burlington music scene is extremely supportive of each other,” says Smith. “I’ve never felt the sense of competition. It’s very mutually supportive.”

Cricket Blue will release its first, untitled EP at Jenke Arts in Burlington on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 8 p.m.
