Matthew Birmingham, special investigations commander for the Vermont State Police, was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the state police this month.
In his role as special investigations commander, Birmingham headed up the Vermont Drug Task Force, which is the state police's main drug investigation unit. He was the state's top investigator in the continuing efforts to address problems related to opiate addiction in the state.
According to a state police press release, Birmingham joined the force in 1998 as a trooper in the Rutland barracks and held a number of positions in the criminal division before leading the drug task force.
As lieutenant colonel, Birmingham will serve as the deputy director of the state police, reporting to Col. Thomas L'Esperance, the top uniformed officer in the state police.
