Montpelier's plan to develop the recently purchased Carr Lot, shown here in an overhead rendering, will informed by community input.

What will the new transit and welcome center at One Taylor Street in Montpelier be like? That's yet to be determined, and largely up to the community.

Over the next three months, Montpelier will be hosting three meetings to garner community input on specifics about the site and building, as well as the scale of the project. At a fourth meeting, in July, architects will present the resulting plans.

“The Taylor Street project and property presents a unique opportunity for a public/private partnership on a critical downtown site with exciting possibilities,” said Gregg Gossens, lead architect on the project. “To successfully capture these opportunities, we have laid out a meaningful public participation process. The process will be as inclusive as possible and productively structured. Participation by all, reinforced and facilitated by the design team, will ensure truly civic effort that is visionary and engaging.”

Each event will include a community discussion and the first two will also include a walking tour of the One Taylor Street site. The discussions are intended to build upon one another, so participants are encouraged to attend all the meetings.

All events will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The meeting schedule is as follows:

  • May 6 at Christ Church Parish Hall, 64 State Street. The goal of this event is to facilitate community input on large-scale community issues and opportunities for the project. This event will allow community members to identify and prioritize important issues and opportunities for the property. This will include a walking tour of the site and surrounding areas.
  • May 21 at Lost Nation Theater, 39 Main Street. The goal of this event is to facilitate community input on a site specific and immediate neighbor scale. This event will build on the resulting input from the first session and then allow community members to identify and prioritize important issues and opportunities for the property at a narrower site and community place making scale. This will include a walking tour of the site.
  • June 10 at Christ Church Parish Hall, 64 State Street. The goal of this event is to facilitate community input on a site and building specifics and scale. This event will build on the resulting input from the previous two sessions and then allow community members to identify and prioritize important issues and opportunities for the property at a site community place making and architectural scale. The design team will present a number of design options.
  • July 16 at Bethany Church Fellowship Hall, 115 Main Street. The goal of this event is for the architects to present the results of the Community Participation Events and to celebrate the community-wide effort.
