Upper Valley Affordable Housing Project Approved

After nine years of legal wrangling, an affordable housing project will be allowed to move ahead in the Upper Valley.

The Vermont Supreme Court has upheld a lower court ruling allowing three non-profits to construct 28 apartments and eight condos on eight acres in Woodstock. Some of the dwellings will be in a renovated Grange Hall. Abutters had challenged the plan, claiming water rights and disputing property easements. But the developers prevailed. Andrew Winter, Executive Director of Twin Pines Housing Trust, says he is thrilled with the court’s decision.

“It allows an important affordable housing opportunity in the Upper Valley and proceed with a project in one of the most expensive communities in the state," Winters said.

Construction is scheduled to begin next spring, and is expected to last a year and create 34 local jobs.
