This week, Vermont’s Education Secretary announced that Luke Foley of Northfield Middle High School is the 2014 Teacher of the Year.
Foley’s days aren’t spent in a typical classroom. He teaches in the school’s “alternative program” where students do intensive service-based projects that help them find a connection to their community, and apply classroom learning in real-world situations.
He spoke with Vermont Edition about how his approach to alternative programs distinguishes him in the classroom and in the field work he does with students.
