Same-Sex Married Couples Celebrate New Immigration Status

Two same-sex married couples in Vermont are celebrating their new immigration status after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling cleared the way for the foreign-born spouses to gain legal residency in the country.

Peru-born Christian Pinillos and his spouse, Jason Kirchick, live in Stowe. Pinillos was in the country on a work visa and feared he would lose his job. He now has his green card.

Japanese natve Takako Ueda and her wife, Frances Herbert, live in Dummerston. Ueda's student visa expired, and federal authorities demanded in 2011 that she leave the country. She later got a deferral of deportation but remained in legal limbo until the federal court decision.

Ueda was told this past week that her green card is in the mail.
