Vermont State Police are investigating vandalism as the possible cause of two loaded grain cars colliding with a third car and derailing.
The incident, shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday, happened on a side spur of the train tracks behind Green Mountain Feed.
Rail maintenance crews determined that the brakes of two loaded cars had been tampered with and disengaged. The cars, with a combined weight of more than 500,000 pounds, crashed into a third grain car, pushing it off the end of the rails.
Authorities say the grain cars stopped short of an embankment at the back of a residential property. They say damage could have been worse if the third car's brakes were not working.
