Weekend Forum Examines Economics Of Environmental Issues

An outdoor forum is being held this weekend in Northern Vermont that will address the relationship between economics and ecology.

The Rendezvous is a two-day event that will take place in a natural ampitheater  outside of Irasburg.

Members of environmental and social justice groups from across New England and Quebec are expected to attend.

The keynote speaker will be Peter Brown, a professor at McGill University’s School of Environment, and the co-author of Right Relationship: Building a Whole Earth Economy.

Brown says that our current economic system assumes endless growth and limitless potential wealth.

He believes that philosophy  is contributing to the destruction of finite natural resources, and growing tension between rich and poor.

VPR's Neal Charnoff spoke with Peter Brown from his office in Montreal.

Neal was a reporter and VPR's All Things Considered host from 2001 to 2014. He joined VPR in 1996, hosting VPR's jazz programming, including live performances from the VPR studios and the Discover Jazz Festival. Prior to VPR, Neal was a programmer and host for WNCS in Montpelier and WDEV in Waterbury. He holds a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College.
