Vermont Road Conditions Improved, Report Finds

A foundation's analysis of the nation's highway system based on 2009 data shows Vermont has shown "significant improvement" in road conditions.

The Burlington Free Press reports the state jumped from 42nd place to 28th in the ranking by the Reason Foundation, the biggest improvement of any state.

In 2009, the state enacted a fuel-tax increase to support a new bonding program to pump more money into bridge maintenance. That was also when the state repaved I-89 between Richmond and Georgia.

This year, the Shumlin administration and the Legislature agreed to again increase fuel taxes to help the state with its road and bridge programs.
